In a decisive and urgent move, the International Federation of Red Cross has initiated an appeal with the aim of raising a substantial CHF 27 million (equivalent to N23 billion). This funding is intended to provide crucial support to the Nigerian Red Cross Society in addressing the severe hunger crisis currently affecting the nation. This significant announcement was made during a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, led by Bhupinder Tomar, the head of the delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Tomar underscored the gravity of the unprecedented hunger crisis that has gripped Nigeria this year. He commended President Bola Tinubu for recognizing the severity of the situation and declaring a state of emergency to address food insecurity.
Furthermore, the importance of widespread public involvement was emphasized, as the Red Cross Society seeks to extend its assistance to an impressive 1,092,300 individuals. This aid will encompass cash support, food provisions, nutritional assistance, and the critical delivery of water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
Oluyemisi Adeaga, the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, highlighted the concerning rise in the number of citizens facing food insecurity, emphasizing the imminent threat this poses to the country’s peace and stability. Adeaga stressed that, like any great nation, Nigeria must prioritize the nutritional well-being of its citizens. Addressing this hunger crisis is not solely a matter of dignity but a matter of paramount national security.
In a unified call to action, Adeaga urged individuals and organizations of goodwill to stand in solidarity with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, working collectively to provide relief to the most vulnerable members of society who are currently grappling with the indignity of uncertainty surrounding their next meal.
