Horti-Nigeria Boosts Agriculture With Solar-powered Irrigation Pumps In Four States

By Grace Samuel

Horti-Nigeria, a project backed by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, has successfully delivered 10 solar-powered irrigation pumps to farmers in four states across Nigeria.

The benefitting states are Kano, Ogun, Kaduna, and Oyo states.

The Dutch-funded initiative, which commenced in 2021 has been a driving force in creating a sustainable and inclusive horticulture sector, effectively enhancing food and nutrition security across 10 Local Councils in the four beneficiary states.

In a statement to mark International Clean Energy Day, Programme Director of HortiNigeria, Mohammed Salasi, noted that the environmentally-friendly technology demonstrates the organization’s dedication to protecting the environment.

He said it offers a practical remedy for scarcity of water and the increasing expenses for irrigation fuel.

According to him, the program has given out 10 high-capacity solar irrigation pumps and provided training in sustainable practices to more than 50,000 farmers, with a particular emphasis on cabbage, cucumber, okra, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, watermelon, and sweet corn value chains.

He further explained that these efforts have not only improved agricultural productivity but also greatly reduced the environmental impact of farming activities.
