Heavy rains, gale-force winds affect over 12,000 Sri Lankans

Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center says heavy rains and gale-force winds on Thursday affected more than 12,000 Sri Lankans in many parts of the country, killing one.

Mr Pradeep Kodippili, an Assistant Director at the center, said that the affected people belonged to 2,672 families in Ratnapura, Kandy, Kalutara, Gampaha, Colombo and Matara districts.

He said that  Gampaha was worst hit, with  8,517 people from 2,448 families.

According to Kodippili, the deceased was a disaster relief officer who was carried away by strong currents.

Heavy rains were reported in many parts of the South Asian country in the past week.

The country’s Department of Meteorology announced that showers or thundershowers would occur through the week in the country.

It warned that threat of floods would continue.
