Gov Sani unveils 10-year climate action policy for Kaduna

By Faridat Salifu

The Kaduna State Government has launched a 10-year climate change policy aimed at addressing the impacts of climate change and promoting sustainable development.

The policy was unveiled on Wednesday by Governor Uba Sani during the inauguration of the state’s Climate Change Policy and Position Statement in Kaduna, the state capital.

Governor Sani emphasized the policy’s goal to foster low-carbon, climate-resilient, and gender-responsive socio-economic development.

“This policy will serve as a guiding framework for public education, monitoring systems, and sustainable development initiatives, preparing Kaduna for future climate challenges,” Sani stated.

Highlighting the significance of the policy, Governor Sani said, “The 2024 Climate Change Policy is a pioneering initiative in northern Nigeria, designed to combat the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.

“It aligns with the National Climate Change Policy (2021-2030) and was developed with contributions from various stakeholders, including ACReSAL and Lafiya Projects. Our aim is to reduce emissions, enhance climate resilience, and integrate climate considerations into state planning.”

The governor called on the citizens of Kaduna to support the effective implementation of the policy, ensuring the state becomes more resilient to climate change.

In his remarks, Balarabe Abbas, the Minister of Environment, praised Kaduna’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

He stressed the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach, involving government agencies, the private sector, academia, and civil society organizations, to drive sustainable solutions.

“This policy sets an agenda for other states in Nigeria and beyond. Together, we can achieve our shared climate objectives and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come,” Abbas said.

Abubakar Buba, the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, noted that the policy was part of commitments made by the state at COP 28.

He explained that the policy would guide the ministry’s budget, focusing on health, education, agriculture, and issues concerning Persons Living with Disabilities.

Abdulhamid Umar, National Project Coordinator for ACReSAL, also commended Kaduna for its proactive approach. “This policy is a significant step towards mitigating the effects of climate change in the state,” Umar stated.

The launch of Kaduna’s Climate Change Policy is a giant stride in the state’s efforts to address environmental challenges and underscores its leadership in climate action within northern Nigeria.
