The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has commissioned Abia State’s newly introduced electric buses, calling for united global efforts to address pollution and climate change.
Commissioning the buses, Monday in Umuahia, she described climate-friendly initiatives as vital interventions that deserve widespread support because of their direct benefits to public health.
Okonjo-Iweala asserted that environmental degradation and climate change remain some of the most serious challenges facing humanity, stressing that pollution-related problems continue to affect lives and economies across the world.
She noted that although Africa contributes only about three percent of global carbon emissions, the continent is disproportionately affected by climate-related impacts, making it essential for all regions to play their part in protecting the environment.
The WTO chief praised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and his administration for pioneering the introduction of electric buses in Nigeria, expressing hope that other states would replicate the initiative.
According to her, leadership at the subnational level is critical in driving sustainable development and demonstrating that practical climate solutions can be implemented even in developing economies.
Governor Alex Otti, in his address at the occasion, described the electric buses as a symbol of a new future aligned with the global transition toward zero-emission transportation.
He stated that the world is steadily moving away from fossil fuel dependence and that Abia State is positioning itself to be part of this global shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
Otti explained that the electric buses were specifically designed to accommodate Persons Living with Disabilities, reflecting the administration’s commitment to inclusive public transportation.
He added that when fully charged, each bus can travel between 400 and 450 kilometers, making them suitable for regular urban commuting without frequent recharging.
The governor announced that the buses would offer free transportation to commuters across Abia State from December through the early part of January 2026 on designated routes.
He said the initiative was intended to encourage public acceptance of the new transport system while easing transportation costs for residents during the festive period.
Otti also disclosed that the buses are equipped with special surveillance cameras to enhance passenger safety and deter criminal activities.
According to him, the installed cameras will record and trace unlawful acts, thereby improving security and accountability within the public transport system.
The commissioning of the electric buses marks a significant milestone in Abia State’s transport and environmental policy, reinforcing Nigeria’s broader push toward sustainable development and climate-conscious governance.
