FRSC warns motorists to reduce speed as rainy season intensifies

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State has advised motorists to reduce speed, maintain caution, and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent crashes during the rainy season.
The Ogun Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota on Monday.
He said the advisory became necessary due to increased risks associated with wet and slippery roads, stressing that excessive speed during rainfall reduces vehicle control and increases crash risks.
Ogunjobi urged drivers to apply lower-than-normal speed limits when it rains and maintain at least double or triple the usual following distance to allow sufficient braking time.
He also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before travelling, including checking tyres, brake systems, windscreen wipers, headlights, brake lights, and indicators.
According to him, poor visibility and faulty vehicle components are major contributors to avoidable road accidents during heavy rainfall.
The FRSC commander further warned motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads or crossing running water, noting that such actions often lead to serious accidents or vehicle damage.
He added that drivers should park safely and wait for heavy rain to subside when visibility becomes poor, rather than risk continuing their journey.
Ogunjobi referenced seasonal forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which predicted a variable rainfall pattern and a longer rainy season in Ogun State.
He also noted warnings from the Federal Ministry of Environment identifying the state as one of those at risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding this year.
