 By Yemi Olakitan

According to state news, deadly seasonal floods have caused the collapse of more than 2,500 homes in eastern Sudan, making thousands of people homeless in a region that was already in a state of extreme poverty. As of late Thursday evening, the SUNA news agency reported that torrential rains in the River Nile province had partially destroyed another 546 homes.

Since the beginning of the rainy season in May, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that floods have affected a total of 38,000 people across the East African nation.

Earlier, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that at least six more people had been killed and an unconfirmed number of people had been injured when the floods in the Central Darfur province caused their homes to collapse or be washed away. In a statement; issued by OCHA on Monday, approximately 2,800 homes were wiped out in the same province, while more than 1,620 homes sustained some level of damage.

The United Nations reported that 12 more people were killed by flash floods in South Darfur the previous month. The rainy season in Sudan typically lasts until September, with the peak of the flooding occurring between the months of August and September. According to the United Nations, in 2021, rains and flooding in Sudan affected the lives of more than 314,000 people across the country.

To this point, the provinces of Kassala, South Darfur, Central Darfur, South Kordofan, the White Nile, and the River Nile have been among the most severely affected regions.

It is currently unknown how many people have died across the entire country. It was reported by SUNA on Wednesday that two children lost their lives when floodwaters destroyed the home they shared in the central province of the White Nile.
