The Federal Government has expressed its readiness to open up the interstate water transportation system in order to address the high cost of transportation, particularly in light of the removal of fuel subsidies.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to make use of the extensive waterways within the country.
Bola Oyebamiji, the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), spoke with the press over the weekend, emphasizing the government’s commitment to efficiently managing waterways to contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Oyebamiji explained, “Given the current high transportation costs, we are exploring waterways as an alternative means of transportation. With 28 out of 36 states being navigable, we are determined to make the most of this opportunity and leverage our waterways. Beyond transportation, there are numerous other benefits associated with our water systems that we can tap into. We are dedicated to enhancing the value of our waterways.”
He further highlighted the ongoing economic reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu, expressing optimism that these reforms will ultimately improve the economic situation for all Nigerians.
Oyebamiji acknowledged that economic challenges have persisted in the country for an extended period, dating back to its post-colonial era, and that correcting these issues will take time.
However, he remained confident that these reforms would lead to a better future for the people.
