Farmers in Badume Community have introduced new storage technique for onions to reduce losses.
The Chairman of the Nigeria of Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN), Alhaji Sanusi Maitaki made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that the method was introduced by the Sassakawa Africa Association (SAA) though the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project(KSADP).
”The new technology would bolster the preservation of onion, improve its shelf life and boost quality in storage.
“It will also enhance value addition for buyers and sellers and boost the economy.

“Post-harvest losses are now expected to be reduced using this technology. It also promotes space management,” he said.
The technology, he said, is solar powered.
The chairman further extended appreciation to the Islamic Development Bank, Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project and the Sassakawa Africa for their support.
Also speaking, Mr Yahya Yahuza, the Coordinator, Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture of the SAA, said members were trained on the method.
He commended the association for its forward-looking approach to reducing post-harvest losses.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria is the second onion producing country in Africa after Egypt with over 14 million bags of onion annually, while Kano alone harvests over four million bags of onion every year.
