Experts Urge Farmers to Embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture
Agriculture experts have emphasized the importance of combining various climate adaptation strategies to enhance farmers’ income and bolster food security for Nigeria’s growing population.
This call was made during a recent stakeholders’ meeting on Pre-Profiling for Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Benue State.
CSA, a comprehensive approach, aims to tackle climate change challenges faced by the agricultural sector by simultaneously achieving three critical goals: productivity, adaptation, and mitigation.
Benue State, known for its agricultural significance, is a major producer of livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry.
Agriculture plays a vital role in the state’s economy, employing over 75% of its working population.
Climate change trends in Benue indicate an anticipated increase in the risk and intensity of flooding due to more frequent and intense heavy rainfall events. To address these challenges, the stakeholder validation meeting on climate-smart profiling was convened.
During the meeting, participants discussed the potential impacts of climate change on their agricultural practices and livelihoods.
The focus was on finding solutions that integrate climate-smart strategies to ensure sustainability and resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions.
