Ethiopia set to export wheat to East African countries

The Ministry of Agriculture disclosed that Ethiopia would start exporting wheat to East African countries including Kenya, Djibouti, and South Sudan.
According to Isais Lemma, Director of Crop Development at the Ministry, Ethiopia has met the national demand for wheat after increasing wheat productivity.
More than three million farmers across Oromia, Amhara, Somali, and Afar Regional States are engaged in wheat production.
The Ministry is working to cultivate 32 million hectares of land for wheat production this Ethiopian year. Farmers have already covered 700,000 hectares of land with wheat seeds.
In November this year, the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration (MoTRI) revealed that preparations were underway to export high-quality wheat to international markets.
Similarly, Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) announced in October that it would start trading wheat within the current Ethiopian year.
It also announced that it had prepared a draft agreement with a view to supporting Ethiopia’s ambition to become self-sufficient in wheat production and export cereal to the international market.
