The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Government to fast-track water infrastructure and improve security around critical assets.
Okpebholo made this known on Tuesday in Benin while receiving the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, who led a delegation from the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority on a courtesy visit.
The governor expressed concern over vandalism of public facilities, describing it as unacceptable and a drain on resources.
He disclosed plans to boost security in vulnerable areas, including Obayantor, with the establishment of a Forward Operating Base.
He also assured that the state would meet its 25 per cent counterpart funding obligation for ongoing federal water projects, particularly the Jattu Dam in Etsako West, noting that timely completion is critical to addressing water shortages in Edo North.
“We will ensure we meet our obligations.
Our people need water, and that project must be delivered on schedule,” he said.
Okpebholo added that ongoing infrastructure efforts in the state align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Earlier, Utsev commended the state government for ongoing infrastructure improvements, especially road rehabilitation leading to federal facilities.
He, however, raised concerns over security threats, encroachment on project sites, and vandalism, particularly around Obayantor, and called for stronger protection measures.
The minister also urged the state to support efforts to reclaim encroached lands in Illushi and other operational areas, while calling for urgent intervention to address erosion threatening facilities at the Auchi Integrated Farm.
Utsev expressed optimism that sustained collaboration between both levels of government would enhance water supply, boost agriculture, and drive rural development in Edo State.
