Earth Treasures: Peridot

Peridot is derived from the Arabic word “faridat” which means Gem. It is a quality gem from the variety of the mineral”Olivine”. It is also known as Chrysolite and also known to be one of the oldest gemstones dating back to 1500BC.
Peridot crystal formation occurs in the Earth’s mantle region unlike other mineral formation that occurs in the Earth crust. Peridot when formed in the Earth’s Magma is erupted on the surface of the Earth by Volcanic actions.
Peridot is a unique gemstone comprising of a single colour which is green which varies based on the level of Iron in them. Peridot are hard and durable with attractive vitreous lustre. They are seen in many shapes and cuts like round, oval, emerald, cushion and so on.
Peridots are used as Slag conditioner in metallurgical actions. They are used to purify steel from a slag. They are also used in casting sand when making refractory bricks.
