Earth Treasures: Lolite

Lolite gemstone is a variety of the mineral, Cordierite. It is a Magnessium Iron Aluminum Cyclosilicate mineral. It was named after a French geologist, Louis Cordier, after its discovery in 1813. It is the transparent form of Cordierite and can be used in place of very costly and blue gemstone like Sapphire. It is characterized by light-deep blue colouration with purple inclusions.

Lolite originated from the Greek word “ios” meaning violet which refers to the purple inclusions of the gemstone. It is a popular, affordable and a durable gemstone. It can also be called dichroite, water apphire or lux sapphire.

Lolite exhibits an orthorhombic crystal system, with refractive index between 1.55-1.62 and a specific gravity of 2.6-2.7. It has a vitreous lustre and a cleavage of 3. It shows pleochoism which gives varieties of colours on different viewing angles. Lolite gemstone occurs naturally and doesn’t undergo any form of treatment. Its deposits may be seen in places like Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Brazil, India etc.

Lolite is used in cabochons and can produce different types of jewelries like rings, Pendants and earrings. It has a number of industrial applications. It is used in heating instruments as an Electrical insulator. It has a moderate weight. It occurs in Silica and Aluminum rich igneous rocks. It has between 1-10 carats and those over 5 carats are relatively rare.

Historically, lolite has been helpful as a healing and soothing stone. It is gentle and helps to soothe emotions and calm a troubled mind.
