Earth Treasures: Gravel
By Chisom Ibemere
Gravel is derived from the french word “gravele” which means gravel or sand. It is a small, irregular pieces of rocks and stones. They are rougher than sand and smaller than stone.
Gravels are loose mass of rocks that occurs throughout the world as a result of sedimentary and erosive geological purposes. Most gravels are formed from the weathering of bedrock.
Gravel is the basic raw material in the construction industry. They are used in making concrete, filling construction sites, in road construction and in the production of construction materials like the blocks, pipes and bricks.
Gravels are wide in distribution especially in glacial deposits, river flood plains and in river deposits. Gravel is one of the mineral resources seen in Western Africa and can be found in Niger, Abia and Plateau States of Nigeria.
