Dangote, Heirs,BUA in NatureNews’ top 50 Corporates for 2024

British multinational telecommunications company, Vodafone and Nigeria’s leading foods, infrastructure, mining and manufacturing conglomerate, Bua Group, has been named among Africa’s Top 50 Sustainable Corporate organisations for 2024 by foremost environment Newspaper, NatureNews.
NatureNews revealed this through a statement by NatureNews Chief Operations Officer (COO), Pius Alabi, issued in Abuja on Sunday, December 23. The statement indicated that the Top 50 corporate organisations, alongside their Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) were selected after an evaluation of their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.
Also in the list are Seplat Energy, Heirs Holdings, Sterling Bank, Zenith Bank, BOSCH, Nasdaq, Mascard Foundation, Flour Mills Nigeria, amongst others.
“We evaluated their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance,” the statement read in part.
The statement further noted that the criteria used to identify the Top 50 sustainable corporate organisations include; environment, social and governance criteria.
It said for environment: “Greenhouse gas emissions: Companies with lower emissions or those actively reducing their carbon footprint.
“Renewable energy usage: Companies investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power.
“Resource management: Companies with efficient water and waste management practices.
“Biodiversity conservation: Companies that protect and restore natural habitats.”
For Social Criteria
“Labor practices: Companies with fair labor standards, safe working conditions, and equal opportunities.
“Human rights: Companies that respect and promote human rights in their operations and supply chains.
“Community engagement: Companies that engage with local communities and contribute to their well-being.
“Diversity, equity, and inclusion*: Companies with diverse workforces, inclusive cultures, and equitable practices.”
While Governance Criteria included; “Board composition: Companies with diverse, independent boards that oversee sustainability practices.
“Transparency and disclosure: Companies that provide clear, timely information about their sustainability performance.
“Stakeholder engagement: Companies that engage with stakeholders, including investors, customers, and NGOs.”
Additional criteria included; “United Nations sustainable development goals: Companies that align their sustainability strategies with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
