Concerns mount as Ogun community protests indiscriminate waste disposal

By Faridat Salifu

In light of the recent upsurge in cholera cases within Ogun State, residents living along Quarry Road in Abeokuta South Local Government Area have voiced their apprehension over the unchecked disposal of waste along the road.

On Monday, residents living in close proximity to Quarry Road shared their concerns with the media, emphasizing that unless immediate action is taken to curb the indiscriminate dumping of garbage, the upward trend in cholera cases may persist.

Quarry Road, a vital link connecting various towns to the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, has witnessed an unfortunate sight: litter scattered across the median and a substantial pile of refuse in front of an abandoned piece of land.

Local residents are alarmed about the potential health hazards posed by these unsightly garbage heaps, especially in the face of the growing number of cholera cases in various parts of the state.

It is well-documented that the presence of waste in public spaces not only mars the environment but also contributes significantly to the spread of diseases.

Residents firmly believe that the accumulation of refuse stands as a significant contributor to the current surge in cholera cases across the state.

Rotimi Oduniyi, the Press Officer of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, clarified that the government is not responsible for the trash on the road.

He pointed out that designated areas with waste bins are available for residents to dispose of their garbage, but some individuals opt for road dumping due to sheer laziness.

Nonetheless, Oduniyi assured the public that efforts are underway to rectify the situation and clean up the trash from the road. It is imperative for all residents to shoulder the responsibility of proper waste disposal and utilize the designated areas for garbage disposal.

By adopting these practices, we can maintain a cleaner environment and mitigate the risk of disease transmission.

Swift and decisive action is paramount to address this pressing issue. Proper waste management and routine garbage collection are indispensable for upholding a clean and healthy environment.
