Climate Focused NGO, CAMIC Bemoans Noise Pollution in African Cities
By Obiabin Onukwugha
Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has warned of growing impacts of noise pollution across African cities.
It said as our continent experiences rapid urbanization and industrialization, noise pollution has emerged as a significant environmental and public health issue, posing severe consequences for both human well-being and the environment.
“Noise pollution, often an overlooked aspect of environmental degradation, is generated from sources like traffic, industrial activities, construction, and even social events. Studies show that prolonged exposure to high levels of noise can lead to various health issues, including hearing loss, sleep disturbances, cardiovascular problems, and stress-related illnesses. Furthermore, it affects wildlife, disrupting communication, navigation, and breeding patterns.
”Noise pollution is a silent threat that impacts millions of Africans daily, It’s crucial that we raise awareness and implement effective strategies to curb its impact. A healthy environment includes not just clean air and water, but also soundscapes free from excessive, harmful noise,” said the body in a statement by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, on Tuesday.
The body suggested ways that noise pollution can be managed, which include; regulatory frame work, proper urban planning and zoning, public awareness and sensitisation, monitoring and as well, community involvement, amongst others.
The statement added: “At CAMIC, we believe that a sustainable environment must address all forms of pollution, including noise. Through research, education, and advocacy, we are committed to working with governments, civil society, and citizens to ensure Africa’s soundscapes remain conducive to both human health and biodiversity.
“We urge all stakeholders, from policymakers to community members, to take immediate and collective action to combat this growing problem.”
CAMIC is a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability and combating climate change.
