Borno Govt Sets Up Panel on Farmers/Herders’ Conflicts

By Faridat Salifu

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has taken a significant step towards peace and harmony by establishing a panel to address the long-standing conflict between farmers and herders in the state.

Emphasizing the importance of resolving the conflict over pastures and water points, Governor Zulum inaugurated the committee on Wednesday, in Gambouru/Ngala.

The committee, led by Special Adviser-designate Tijjani Guzamala, includes representatives from the police, Department of State Services, Emirate Councils, Miyetti Allah, Alhaya Association, and the Governor’s Office.

The governor emphasized the need to uncover the root causes of the conflicts and re-establish cattle routes, as well as identify underutilized grazing reserves.

These measures, Governor Zulum believes, will guide the government in addressing the underlying issues and prevent further clashes between herders and farmers in the state.

Furthermore, Governor Zulum demonstrated his commitment to the well-being of communities affected by the conflict by distributing food items to 11,242 households and disbursing N221.7 million to women and the elderly.

This compassionate gesture serves as a testament to the governor’s dedication to providing practical support to those affected by the conflict.

In addition, Governor Zulum signed the 2024 budget of N358.7 billion into law, expressing gratitude for the House of Assembly’s decision to increase the budget by N18.1 billion.

The governor emphasized that this additional funding would facilitate the completion of ongoing capital projects across the state. The ‘Budget of Consolidation and Progress’ allocates N208.4 billion to capital expenditure and N150.4 billion to recurrent expenditure.

Speaker of the House, Abdulkarim Lawan, presented the bill to the governor for assent, reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to supporting the Zulum administration.

This collaborative approach between the executive and legislative branches reinforces the government’s unified efforts to bring about positive change and progress in Borno State.

In conclusion, Governor Zulum’s proactive actions and the passage of the 2024 budget signify a collective commitment to fostering peace, development, and progress in Borno State.
