Axian energy’s €105m Kolda plant to power 235,000 in Senegal

By Abdullahi Lukman

Axian Energy has officially launched construction of the NEA Kolda solar power plant in southern Senegal with a foundation stone laying ceremony on May 22, 2025.

Located in Tankanto Escale, Kolda region, around 700 km from Dakar, the 60 MW plant will include a 72 MWh battery storage system.

Once operational, it is expected to power over 235,000 people and enhance the stability of Senegal’s national grid.

The project supports Senegal’s goal to derive 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Regional authorities and local communities, the plant’s primary beneficiaries, attended the ceremony.

With a total investment nearing €105 million, the project is backed by major financiers including the Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF), Dutch development bank FMO, and Germany’s DEG, who collectively provided €84 million in funding in October 2024. Construction has been assigned to the Voltalia–Entech consortium.

Beyond energy generation, NEA Kolda is positioned as a driver of social and economic development in the Casamance region.

AXIAN Energy is implementing a comprehensive CSR plan focused on healthcare access, education, economic growth, sports, culture, and climate resilience.

Initiatives already in place include financial training for women and youth, support for sustainable farming and livestock practices, and infrastructure like vaccination parks and water access for breeders.

Planned projects include a maternity center and sports facilities. Approximately 400 local workers will be employed during construction and operations, boosting regional employability.

AXIAN Energy CEO Benjamin Memmi highlighted the project as emblematic of a new generation of inclusive, innovative energy infrastructure in West Africa.

Impact & Sustainability Manager Maïramou Haman Adji emphasized the importance of linking energy development with sustainable local transformation.
