In a momentous occasion commemorating the 3rd Anniversary Lecture and the presentation of the Hero of Environmental Actions for Development (HEAD) Awards, NatureNews Africa convened a distinguished gathering on February 27, 2024.
Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, H.E. Obong Victor Attah, recipient of the lifetime achievement Award for sustainable environment, delivered a poignant speech on behalf of the award recipients, emphasizing the critical need to prioritize environmental conservation efforts.
Attah issued a compelling call to action, urging both individuals and governments to forge stronger connections and direct their focus towards environmental protection.
He highlighted the alarming levels of pollution in Port Harcourt, painting a vivid picture of green leaves on trees morphing into a dismal black hue due to pollution from refineries.
Lamenting the pervasive disregard for the Earth’s well-being, Attah cited the ongoing pollution crisis in Ogoniland despite promises of cleanup efforts.
In recognition of Funto Boroffice’s dedicated efforts in plastic recycling, Attah underscored the far-reaching consequences of environmental pollution, asserting that it not only degrades the environment but also poses serious health risks to humans.
He called upon private individuals to actively engage in environmental initiatives and lauded those who have already taken steps in this direction.
Expressing concern over the absence of government representatives at environmental and climate events, Attah implored awardees to transcend mere acceptance of awards and actively advocate for environmental preservation within their respective spheres of influence.
He concluded his address with a solemn warning, stating that failure to address environmental degradation could lead to irreversible damage, emphasizing the imperative for all individuals to prioritize nature conservation efforts.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our environment for future generations, urging collective action and heightened awareness towards nature preservation.
Obong’s impassioned plea resonated deeply, igniting a renewed sense of urgency among attendees to redouble their efforts in the fight against environmental degradation.
