FG raises panel on Nguru ecological intervention

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated presidential committee on the implementation of the Nguru ecological intervention, for ecological funds in the areas of afforestation and degraded land in order to mitigate climate change impacts within the regions.

The inauguration was done on Friday in Abuja by the Minister of Environment, Mohammed H. Abdullahi, as ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He added that this followed the request made by the Emir of Nguru, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Mustafa Ibn Mai Kyari, on behalf of the Forest Farmers (Nguru) Cooperative Society.

The minister said the land was cleared in 2017 through the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to enable implementation of the livelihood project called Rural Agriculture Re-modelled Project Strategies.

Abdullahi disclosed that the request was in conformity with the vision and developmental agenda of this present administration, mostly in attainment of the NDC and global emission reduction.

He however said that the President had directed that an inter-ministerial committee comprising relevant ministries and agencies be set up by considering the request and come up with plans and recommendations that must be Inclusive, but not limited to the modalities for its implementation and cost implications.

“The Federal Government commits to tackling climate change and environmental challenges, food security, as well as other socio-economic problems across the country while improving the general well being of the people.

“This is being clearly demonstrated through our various policies, programmes and initiatives some of which, as you are aware, are inter-sectoral. It is also being demonstrated by Mr. President’s directive to the effect that this committee should be established.

“However, we acknowledge the fact that, Government alone cannot do it, collaborative partnerships of all stakeholders including our Royal Fathers, are critical. It is thus heartwarming that what is happening today is at the instance of a royal father.

“I am therefore particularly excited about the concern and zeal of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Nguru, to identify with our vision to make life better for the generality of our people through degraded lands restoration, mitigation of climate change impacts as well as improved livelihoods, “the minister said.

However, the committee is expected to report back on 27th January, 2023.

Hence, the committee are urged to follows the Terms of Reference (ToR) as a guide in reporting:
“Assess the project site for on-the-spot evaluation.
Identify key intervention areas.
Liaise and work with relevant organization for funding intervention.
Give a detailed plan of action including financial implications.
Submit a comprehensive technical report including recommendations to the Honourable Minister of Environment.”
