Al-Hikmah University, in collaboration with the Kwara State Ministry of Livestock and Agricultural Development, has commenced maize cultivation on a 3.5-hectare farmland at its Faculty of Agriculture in Igbaja to support food production and food security in the state.

The planting activity commenced on Tuesday at the university’s Igbaja campus in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, according to information provided by the university.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lateef Folorunsho Oladimeji, explained that the partnership was aimed at expanding the institution’s farm and strengthening food production and food security across Kwara State.

Oladimeji added that the initiative would also promote agricultural innovations through collaboration between the university and the state government.

The Director of the Abdulraheem Oladimeji Centre for Entrepreneurship and Vocational Studies (AOCEVS), Dr Salahudeen Olanrewaju, said the project would provide students with practical agricultural experience and learning opportunities.

Olanrewaju noted that the initiative also supports the university’s broader commitment to entrepreneurship, vocational training and self-reliance.

NatureNews notes that partnerships between higher education institutions and agricultural authorities can provide opportunities for practical training while supporting local food production and agricultural innovation.

The maize cultivation initiative adds an agricultural component to efforts to strengthen food security in Kwara State through institutional farming, student training and collaboration with government.
