The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has urged
the state government to partner with the private sector to establish more primary food processing and packaging centres, especially in agriculturally productive areas.
The resolution followed a motion moved by Effiong Johnson, Chief Whip of the House, and seconded by Uwem Imo-Ita during plenary.
Johnson said the state is experiencing an agricultural revival, with increased participation in farming expected to yield substantial harvests in the coming seasons.
He stressed the need to boost the market value of farm produce by converting raw materials into processed goods to enhance food security and self-sufficiency.
He added that the Assembly is committed to generating employment in the agricultural sector through partnerships with small and medium-scale enterprises involved in food processing and packaging.
In his ruling, the Speaker, Udeme Otong, directed the House Committees on Agriculture and Commerce/Industry to work with the Akwa Ibom State Investment Corporation and the Ministry of Agriculture to facilitate the establishment of the centres and submit a report within one month.
The House subsequently adjourned plenary to March 24, 2026, to reconvene at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Uyo.
