NESREA shuts chemical factory over environmental pollution

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed a Bond Chemicals factory in Oyo State due to violations linked to the discharge of untreated industrial waste into the environment.
The enforcement action, disclosed in a statement on Thursday, followed verified complaints from local residents about the release of wastewater with a strong offensive odour from the facility. According to NESREA, these complaints were confirmed after a compliance inspection conducted on February 18.
The inspection revealed that the factory lacked a functional effluent treatment plant, a critical requirement for managing industrial waste and safeguarding public health.
The agency stated that the factory had been previously notified about these infractions and was given clear directives to immediately cease the pollution, install a functioning effluent treatment system, and obtain the necessary regulatory permits.
However, a follow-up inspection showed that the company had failed to comply with these directives, prompting NESREA to take the drastic step of sealing the facility.
In its statement, NESREA emphasized the importance of compliance with environmental regulations, particularly the installation and proper operation of pollution control systems.
The Director-General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, reiterated that industries operating in Nigeria must adhere strictly to national environmental standards to prevent further degradation of the environment and ensure public health is protected.
“The agency is committed to ensuring that all industrial operators comply with established environmental standards.
This is crucial for safeguarding the health of Nigerians and protecting our environment,” Barikor said.
The NESREA statement also highlighted that the agency would intensify monitoring and enforcement efforts nationwide to ensure other facilities comply with environmental regulations.
This enforcement action is part of NESREA’s ongoing crackdown on environmental violations across the country.
In recent months, the agency has closed down several facilities for various infractions, including failure to conduct Environmental Impact Assessments and operating without functional waste treatment systems.
NESREA’s efforts are aimed at curbing the environmental damage caused by industrial operations and improving the country’s overall environmental health.
NESREA concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection and public health, stating that the agency would continue to take decisive action against those violating environmental laws.
