Agriculture anchors Nigeria’s economic priorities — Infor Minister, Idris

By Faridat Salifu

The Federal Government recently reiterated that agriculture remains a central pillar of Nigeria’s economic agenda, highlighting the sector’s role in driving food security and national stability.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, told stakeholders in Abuja that strengthening agricultural productivity is key to the government’s broader economic reform strategy and national growth objectives.

Speaking at the Quarterly Citizens and Stakeholders’ Engagement Session convened by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Idris said the government recognises that boosting agriculture can create jobs, stabilise food supplies and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported products.

He commended the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, for policies and interventions aimed at increasing food production, including reforms that have seen a sharp decline in essential food prices.

The information minister emphasised that food security is not only an economic priority but also a foundation for peace and stability, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to keeping Nigerians informed and involved in agricultural policymaking.

Officials said the renewed focus on agriculture comes as the government steps up efforts to expand mechanisation, improve access to finance and strengthen value chains in key food crops across the country.
