The Nigerian chapter of the International Press Institute, IPI Nigeria, is mourning the death of Dotun Oladipo, a veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online who died on Tuesday, August 25, in Lagos. He was aged 56 years.
In a statement on Wednesday, IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed described the death as “a profound loss” to the media industry and to the struggle for press freedom in Nigeria.
He said the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee and entire membership considered Mr. Oladipo as “a highly dependable, resourceful, professional, amiable and deeply committed member” of the Institute.
Oladipo was appointed Chairman of IPI Nigeria’s Programmes Committee in 2024. The Institute said he contributed significantly to its activities, including the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference, and served on the planning committee for the 2026 AGM and Conference.
“Despite the demands of running The Eagle Online, which he founded and published about 15 years ago, Mr. Oladipo consistently made time to undertake assignments entrusted to him by IPI Nigeria,” the statement said.
Earlier this month, he traveled from Lagos to Abeokuta to represent the Institute at an event, despite having a prior engagement in Lagos the same day, a sacrifice IPI Nigeria said reflected his commitment to the profession.
Oladipo had a career spanning more than two decades in both traditional and digital journalism. He worked with Newswatch, The Punch, The Compass, Nigerian Tribune and The Sun before founding The Eagle Online.
IPI Nigeria extended condolences to his family, colleagues, friends and staff of The Eagle Online praying for “strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
“IPI Nigeria has lost a dependable colleague, a passionate advocate and a trusted friend. May the gentle soul of our dear brother, colleague and friend rest in perfect peace. Adieu, Dotun,” the statement added.
