NatureNews introduces Climate Equity editorial section for barriers-breaking disability’s impact storytelling

By Abbas Nazil

NatureNews, Africa’s foremost independent newspaper on environment and climate change, has introduced Climate Equity editorial section dedicated to climate impact storytelling on people living with disabilities.

The new section focuses on social inclusion dimensions of climate reporting, bringing national and global attention to communities often left out of environmental conversations and actions.

Climate Equity will be adapted into a weekly special page in the NatureNews PDF edition, ensuring consistent coverage and deeper storytelling on disability and climate justice.

It joins existing impactful segments such as Climate Policy Watch, Renewable Energy Focus, Conservation Frontlines, and Green Economy, which continue to amplify environmental sustainability initiatives across Africa.

NatureNews’ Editor-in-Chief, Aliu Akoshile, who said the new section delves into the often-overlooked intersection of climate change and disability, explained that Climate Equity will shed light on the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on people with special abilities.

By focusing on the need for inclusive and accessible solutions, Mr. Akoshile said the section aims to amplify the voices of vulnerable individuals and promote equitable climate action in line with NatureNews’ commitment to people-centered environmental journalism.

Mr. Akoshile, who has facilitated multiple climate journalism trainings, said with the launch of the Climate Equity section, NatureNews acknowledges that fairness and inclusivity are not mere buzzwords, but essential foundations for sustainable climate action.

Arguing that climate justice can not be achieved without protecting and empowering the vulnerable population, Mr Akoshile said Climate Equity seeks to influence policymakers, development agencies, and communities to design climate strategies that leave no one behind.

As climate impacts intensify across Africa, NatureNews publisher said the new section reaffirms the newspaper’s mission to champion environmental journalism that drives climate awareness, governance accountability, and inclusive sustainable development.

By amplifying underreported voices and examining the unequal burden climate change imposes on vulnerable populations, Climate Equity section will feature investigative reports, personal stories, expert insights, and community-driven solutions focused on inclusion.

NatureNews management says the initiative responds to growing evidence that people with special abilities face higher risks during floods, heatwaves, droughts, and displacement as limited mobility, poor access to emergency information, and weak infrastructure often deepen their exposure to climate-related disasters.

The Climate Equity section, therefore, aims to bring these realities to the forefront of environmental journalism in Africa and beyond as it tracks government policies, humanitarian responses, and advocacy efforts related to disability and climate resilience.

The new section will also seek to collaborate with disability rights groups, researchers, and grassroots organizations to ensure accurate news framing of inclusion stories, while climate equity stories will highlight the challenges and innovative ways communities are adapting to climate impacts despite limited support

The introduction of the new section comes as climate impacts intensify across regions already struggling with poverty and fragile health systems, hence NatureNews urges its teeming audiences to engage with the section, share experiences, and contribute story ideas to expand the conversation on climate equity.
