Gov Adeleke Launches Osun State’s One Million Tree Planting Campaign Initiative

By Faridat Salifu

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced a bold plan to plant one million trees throughout the state in an effort to address the consequences of climate change and fight deforestation.

The initiative, which is set to begin with the planting of 100,000 trees in its first phase, aims to curb the environmental degradation that has been affecting the region.

During a meeting at his office on Wednesday, Governor Adeleke shared details of the tree-planting project, stressing its importance in mitigating the impact of global climate change.

The governor was honoured with the title of “Climate Change Ambassador” by the leaders of the Forestry Council of Nigeria, who praised his commitment to environmental sustainability.

Governor Adeleke assured attendees that his administration is taking proactive steps to address the state’s environmental challenges. “This administration is not just talking about afforestation; we are acting. We’ve approved the raising of one million seedlings, starting with 100,000 in this initial phase. We are determined to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, and Osun is taking the lead in this regard,” he stated.

He further highlighted the alignment between the objectives of the Forestry Council and his government’s climate change policies, pledging full support for their work and future collaborations.

“The work of your association complements our Climate Change Agenda, and we are committed to ensuring its success,” the governor remarked.

Dr. Tajudeen Abiodun Afolabi, President of the Forestry Council of Nigeria, commended Governor Adeleke for his environmental initiatives.

He cited the governor’s passion for climate action as a key factor in the decision to hold the council’s upcoming conference in Osun. “Governor Adeleke has shown exemplary leadership in protecting the environment.

His efforts in Osun are setting a standard not just for the state, but for Nigeria as a whole,” Afolabi said.

The planned conference will bring together experts and professionals from across Nigeria and beyond, further cementing Osun’s place as a leader in climate action and environmental sustainability.
