Sen. Nwoko Affirms Senate’s Commitment to Address Environmental Challenges

By Faridat Salifu

Senator Ned Nwoko, the Vice Chairman on Environment in the Senate and representing the PDP-Delta, has emphasized the Senate’s unwavering dedication to addressing environmental degradation in Nigeria.

In an exclusive interview on Sunday, Senator Nwoko, who hails from Delta North Senatorial District, shed light on the pressing environmental issues that demand immediate attention.

Erosion, particularly in the North Senatorial District of Delta, is a grave concern, impacting his native state profoundly.

Moreover, the widespread issue of flooding affects more than 13 states and five local government units in Delta North Senatorial District.

Senator Nwoko identified pollution as another significant contributor to environmental degradation, citing reckless rubbish disposal and the detrimental impact of gas flaring on both the environment and public health.

He also mentioned the detrimental consequences of crude oil, pipeline vandalism, and oil spills caused by illicit activities in the region.

In response to these challenges, Senator Nwoko emphasized that the Senate has already taken steps to address the pressing issues, beginning with tackling erosion.

A comprehensive list of affected areas has been compiled and incorporated into the upcoming budget to ensure prompt action. This proactive approach is driven by the need to safeguard lives, homes, and villages at risk.

The issue of flooding, which devastates surrounding villages annually, has also received significant attention from the Senate.

Senator Nwoko emphasized the necessity of two crucial actions, despite the associated high costs, to prevent this recurring crisis.

These actions include completing the dam project initiated years ago in the northern region, which was designed to manage water overflow from Cameroonian dams, or alternatively, constructing a new dam.

Furthermore, Senator Nwoko stressed the importance of dredging the River Niger and establishing embankments along its shoreline and waterfront areas.

These measures are essential for addressing environmental concerns and protecting communities along the river.

To combat gas flaring, Senator Nwoko expressed the Senate’s commitment to imposing stringent penalties on those responsible for flaring gas and ensuring compliance with international best practices.

He highlighted the need for Nigeria to align with global pollution standards, as is observed in other oil-producing nations worldwide.

Senator Nwoko concluded by asserting that the Senate’s oversight during the tenth assembly will be rigorous, aiming to hold responsible parties accountable for their actions.

He underlined the importance of protecting the ecosystem, habitats, and human lives from unnecessary harm, emphasizing that financial gain should never come at the expense of these vital aspects.

Senator Ned Nwoko’s firm commitment to addressing environmental issues and his advocacy for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of erosion, flooding, pollution, and gas flaring demonstrate the Senate’s dedication to environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
