Nigeria’s Minister of State for Environment Addresses Global Climate Agenda at 78th UNGA
Dr. Ishaq Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Environment, is representing Nigeria at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), aiming to forge strategic partnerships and bilateral collaborations while updating the global community on Nigeria’s dedication to climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
This was revealed by Haruna Ibrahim, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Environment, in a statement on Monday.
Dr. Salako’s presence at the assembly extends to a significant participation in the high-level meeting for Nature and People, showcasing Nigeria’s pivotal role in Africa and West Africa’s sub-region regarding the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, commonly referred to as the high seas.
Furthermore, the Minister is set to attend the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Ambition Summit, where he will join world leaders in discussions concerning crucial climate action strategies, including Nationally Determined Contributions, Energy Transition Plans, fossil fuel phase-out initiatives, renewable energy targets, and broader economic plans focused on climate adaptation and resilience.
Dr. Salako’s busy schedule also encompasses participation in the Commonwealth Ministers of Environment and Climate Meeting, High Ambition for the High Seas event, and a high-level discussion on building future economies.
Additionally, he plans to engage in bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries and development partners, primarily focusing on environmental and climate change matters.
The Minister emphasized his intention to spotlight President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambitious climate agenda, with a paramount goal of reducing Nigeria’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels. This mission aligns with the nation’s commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
Ibrahim expressed the Ministry’s optimism about the Minister’s engagements at the 78th UN General Assembly, highlighting the significance of Nigeria’s active involvement in global climate discussions.
