The Ministry of Niger Delta Development is forging a new approach to tackle issues of insecurity, environmental degradation, and human development in collaboration with the European Union (EU).
This partnership aims to promote the healthy development of the Niger Delta region, which has long faced challenges in these areas.
During a courtesy visit by Mr. Ruben Aguilera, the Head of the European Union (EU) delegation on Wednesday, Engr. Abubakah Momoh, the Minister of the Ministry of Niger Delta Development, emphasized the federal government’s commitment to the “Renewed Hope” agenda and its plans for the development of the Niger Delta region.
According to him, the ministry is responsible for implementing these plans and programs to foster economic and overall development in the region while coordinating the activities of other agencies in alignment with the Niger Delta Development plan.
“We are charged with the responsibility of executing such plans and programmes for the purpose of developing the region both economically and in other areas, the Ministry also coordinates the activities of other agencies in-line with the Niger Delta Development plan,” he stated.

Minister Momoh highlighted ongoing projects and programs, including road construction and rehabilitation, the provision of jetties, water supply, housing estate construction, and skill acquisition centers.
He expressed the belief that these initiatives, if fully funded and expanded, could help address some of the socio-economic challenges and restiveness in the Niger Delta area.
Mr. Ruben Aguilera, the EU representative, acknowledged the long-standing Niger Delta crisis and the EU’s historical involvement in addressing the region’s challenges.
He expressed the EU’s readiness to collaborate with the ministry to understand its work and find ways to resolve the issues.
The EU is interested in working with the ministry and other development partners to create a strategy and working document that prioritizes projects with a significant impact on the region.
This collaboration between the Ministry of Niger Delta Development and the European Union reflects the commitment to finding comprehensive solutions to the complex challenges facing the Niger Delta region, including security, environmental, and socio-economic issues.
