Kano Govt Commits to Enhancing Food Security Through Irrigation Infrastructure Investment
The Kano State Government in North Western Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to bolstering food security in the region by investing in irrigation infrastructure and supporting the agricultural sector.
Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Abduldalam Gwarzo, conveyed this commitment while addressing farmers during an inspection at the Guzu Guzu Irrigation Farm in Alkalawa, Kabo local government area on Tuesday.
Gwarzo praised the farmers for their unwavering efforts and assured them of his intention to communicate their needs and demands to the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Gwarzo emphasized that the government’s objective is to implement targeted interventions that empower farmers, enhance livelihoods, and contribute to Kano State’s overall economic growth. The primary focus is on boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring long-term food security for the state.
During the visit, the Deputy Governor and his delegation were briefed by the Kano CARES Project Engineer, Bashir Sani, on the existing
infrastructure at the Guzu Guzu farm.
Sani highlighted that the Guzu Guzu Dam, established in 1980, was initially intended for irrigation farming covering an area of 70 hectares.
However, due to inadequate water supply, farmers had abandoned irrigation farming and relied solely on cultivation during the rainy season.
To address this issue, the Kano CARES intervention included the construction of an irrigation canal, enabling farmers to cultivate approximately 200 hectares of farmland. This development aims to
revitalize irrigation farming activities and provide farmers with more opportunities for sustainable agriculture.
The Kano State Government’s commitment to investing in irrigation infrastructure and supporting the agricultural sector is a significant step towards achieving food security, improving farmers’ livelihoods, and driving economic growth in the region.
