Nigeria needs ministry of maritime affairs – Sambo
The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, has expressed the need for the creation of a Ministry of Maritime Affairs in Nigeria.
Speaking at the investiture of Aminu Umar as the new President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Sambo highlighted the immense potential of the nation’s maritime industry and emphasized that Nigeria should not solely rely on oil for economic prosperity.
Sambo acknowledged the significant contribution of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping to the maritime sector and praised the organization for becoming an umbrella body for all stakeholders in the maritime/shipping industry in Nigeria.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving success, urging the new leadership of the chamber to build upon the achievements of their predecessors and make the NCS an esteemed organization.
The minister commended Aminu Umar, the newly appointed president, describing him as a person of great humility and commendable disposition.
He also acknowledged the chamber’s remarkable achievement of becoming the first African member organization to be admitted into the board of the International Chamber of Shipping, which has strengthened Nigeria’s ties with the international maritime community.
Andy Isichei, the immediate-past President of the NCS, highlighted some of the achievements of his administration, including the NCS becoming a full member of the International Chamber of Shipping in 2021. This accomplishment opens up opportunities for Nigerian seafarers to secure training and engagement on international ocean-going vessels, complementing the efforts of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
In his acceptance speech, Aminu Umar expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and the privilege of leading the NCS.
He pledged to lead the chamber to new heights of success and acknowledged the tireless efforts and exceptional leadership of his predecessor, Andy Isichei, in paving the way for collective success.
