40°C Heatwave to Scotch 17 Northern States, FCT – NiMET

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of severe heat stress across Gombe State and 16 other northern states, and the Federal Capital Territory with temperatures expected to rise to 40°C starting Saturday, April 13.
The 16 states are: Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory.
The advisory was shared in NiMet’s latest weather outlook, released Friday and made available in Gombe on Saturday by the agency’s Meteorological Manager for the state, Gayus Musa.
NiMet noted that the combination of high temperatures, humidity, and clear skies following recent rainfall is likely to increase thermal discomfort levels significantly in the region.
“Maximum temperatures in the north are reaching up to 40°C; with clear skies and moisture in the air, heat and discomfort will be more intense,” the agency stated.
Musa urged residents to take proactive measures to protect themselves from the health risks associated with extreme heat.
He advised avoiding prolonged sun exposure, drinking adequate water, and staying in well-ventilated or shaded areas, particularly during peak heat hours between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
He also emphasized the need to look after vulnerable populations, especially children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
“Stakeholders must create greater awareness of heat stress risks and promote preventive actions essential for healthy living during this period,” Musa added.
The advisory comes as Nigeria enters the hottest stretch of its dry season, underscoring the growing concerns around climate extremes and their public health impacts.
