On Monday, the Governor of Borno State, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, visited Bama Local Government Area and distributed food items worth N225 million to over 70,000 families affected by the insurgency in the region.
The governor also met with security operatives to discuss how to improve the security situation and restore peace in the area, which has been under frequent attacks by Boko Haram militants.
Zulum said the gesture was part of his administration’s efforts to assist the communities that have suffered from the violence and poverty caused by the terrorists.
He also said it was to prevent the people from being lured into joining the extremist group.
Bama, which is about 72 km from the state capital Maiduguri, was captured by Boko Haram in September 2014 and recaptured by the Nigerian military in March 2015. However, the town has remained vulnerable to sporadic attacks and raids by the insurgents.
According to reports, Zulum also approved relief packages comprising cash and food for volunteers who are fighting alongside the military and other security agencies against Boko Haram in Bama.
The Oyo government is also conducting an investigation into the activities of Boko Haram in the state, following reports of some suspects being arrested in Ibadan, the state capital.
