Zimbabwe Maintains Food Security Despite Grain Offer from Russia

By Daniel Itai

The Zimbabwean Government has reaffirmed its food security status following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent pledge to offer grain to Zimbabwe ahead of the Russia-Africa Economic summit.

While there were some contentions about the grain offer, the government clarified that it already has sufficient grain supplies and is even planning to export grain to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, Zimbabwe has achieved food security, and the term “vulnerability” will be dropped as it no longer applies. The country’s economy is stable and growing, and it can effectively handle emergencies and vulnerabilities.

The government has implemented various developmental and livelihood upliftment programs, ensuring rural communities can withstand shocks like Cyclone Freddy and late-onset rains.

Last year, Zimbabwe recorded a surplus of wheat production, saving US$300 million in wheat imports. This year, the country expects another bumper harvest, not only in wheat production but also in other grains.

With a stable food supply, Zimbabwe is well-prepared for the next agricultural production season, providing resilience against challenges that may arise in the future.
