World Egg Day: Kwara urges collaboration on nutritious food security

The Kwara State Government has called for synergy among stakeholders in the livestock sub-sector on nutritious food security in the country.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Malam AbdulLateef Alakawa, made the call in Ilorin on Tuesday during the commemoration of the 2022 World Egg Day.
The event was organised by the Kwara chapter of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN).
Alakawa said that to achieve the MDG goal of zero hunger and well-being, stakeholders in the livestock value-chain have a role to play in sensitising the public.
He said there was need to sensitize the people on the importance of nutritious food, especially egg, for the development of the body system.
“Eggs are among the cheapest food that contain every nutrient needed by man for immune building, brain building and some hard-to-get nutrients like Vitamins D and B12 and iodine,” Alakawa said.
The commissioner said Kwara occupied a strategic position in the poultry business with comparative advantage of having the largest feed mills and three large commercial poultry hatcheries.
Alakawa added that the state has an excellent climate and environment for poultry production.
He said that the present government in Kwara was proactively working on harnessing these advantages for the benefit of poultry farmers and the populace.
Alakawa reiterated the state government’s readiness for partnership in achieving food and nutrition security in order to keep poultry products within the reach of the less privileged.
Earlier, the state chairman of PAN, Mr Richard Akinwunmi, said the day was set aside by the International Egg Commission to raise awareness on the importance of egg to human development.
Akinwunmi said that in spite of the challenges of poultry business in the country due to insecurity and other factors, his members still weathered the storm to ensure that poultry products were made available for human consumption.
He thanked the state government for supporting the association adding that more is needed especially soft loans to the registered members.
