World Bicycle day: FCTA plans to establish bicycle lanes in Abuja metropolis
The permanent secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Olusade Adesola, has revealed plans to develop bicycle tracks within the Abuja metropolis.
He revealed this in a statement by the director of Information and Communication FCT, Muhammad Sule, on Sunday.
The statement read that Adesola made the announcement at the opening of the 2023 World Bicycle Day in Abuja, June 3. The event was themed “Cycling – A Better Way to Enjoy the City,”.
Highlighting the inclusion of bicycle tracks in the master plan of Abuja city, Adesola emphasized the need for their development.
He expressed that promoting cycling would contribute to the reduction of climate change effects and emissions.
He further emphasized the benefits of cycling as a recreational activity and a mode of transportation, stating that it can improve heart health and strengthen the limbs.
Adesola commended the Indian High Commission in Nigeria for its continuous support in celebrating World Bicycle Day in the FCT.
The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shri Balasubramanian, encouraged Nigerians to embrace cycling for better health and a healthier environment.
He also mentioned that the commission had been supporting the celebration of this day in the FCT for the past five years.
Similarly, the Bayelsa Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Usman Ibrahim, has encouraged Nigerians to consider using bicycles as a mode of transportation due to its various advantages.
During an awareness ride held in Yenagoa to commemorate World Bicycle Day, Ibrahim highlighted the affordability and health benefits associated with cycling.
He emphasized that bicycles are not only cheaper to acquire compared to motor vehicles but also inexpensive to maintain, promoting physical well-being.
