Women in energy push for stronger climate messaging ahead of WDD 2025

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Women in Oil and Gas (WEOG) has called for consistent and strategic climate communication to drive awareness and action ahead of the 2025 World Decarbonisation Day (WDD). Speaking during a pre-WDD webinar on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in Lagos, WEOG emphasized the crucial role of storytelling and media engagement in supporting Nigeria’s decarbonisation and climate goals.

WEOG National President, Mrs. Tolu Longe, urged stakeholders to tell bold and truthful stories about climate change. “Decarbonisation is not just technical or foreign—it’s about all of us.

The media must help shape the right narrative and spotlight our collective efforts,” she said, reaffirming WEOG’s belief in women as catalysts in the energy transition.

Longe added that the webinar aimed to highlight how climate communication can influence behavior, increase public engagement, and shape both local and global climate policies.

Also speaking, Mrs. Toyin Alozie, Chair of WEOG’s Future Energy Renewable and Climate Action Committee (FERCA), said the group is taking leadership in Nigeria’s transition toward sustainable energy. She affirmed WEOG/FERCA’s commitment to supporting WDD and the broader climate agenda.

Mrs. Toyin Yusuff, Chairperson of WDD 2025, stressed the importance of presenting a balanced narrative on Nigeria’s fossil fuel sector.

“We must move from being climate victims to climate leaders. Sustainable solutions exist, and we must leverage them alongside our energy realities,” she said, urging the media to promote positive stories and opportunities within decarbonisation.

Renowned environmentalist Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi called for shared responsibility in climate advocacy, especially among journalists and religious leaders.

He warned that climate change is reaching a tipping point and urged for urgent, unified action.

Climate advocate Mr. Olumide Idowu also urged the media to bridge the gap between innovation and action.

“Decarbonisation starts with awareness, and journalism is key to telling that story in a way that influences policy and public behavior,” he said.

WEOG launched World Decarbonisation Day in 2024 as an African-led initiative to accelerate inclusive and sustainable climate action.

The 2025 summit, scheduled for September 3–4 in Abuja, will convene over 3,000 stakeholders to showcase Africa’s role in global decarbonisation.
