WaterAid, DP World launch project on safe water access

By Abdullahi Lukman

WaterAid Nigeria, in partnership with DP World, officially launched the Advancing Inclusive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (AI WASH) Project in Lagos on October 22, 2025 to enhance equitable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services in selected communities.

The initiative focuses on improving public health, gender equity, and environmental sustainability, targeting Ojodu and Ikorodu North Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

WaterAid emphasized a strategy of “saturation and sustainability,” ensuring that interventions extend beyond infrastructure delivery to long-term management and behavioral change.

Iorkumbor Emmanuel, WaterAid Nigeria’s Head of Grant Strategic Partnership, highlighted the organization’s collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, describing it as a key leadership partner.

Emmanuel also announced new funding from InfiWall Logistics, backed by PepsiCo, to support ongoing WASH efforts in Lagos communities and schools for the next year.

The project includes a five-year investment plan to help local councils budget for the maintenance and replacement of facilities, promoting 24/7 access to clean water.

Behavioral change campaigns targeting schools and households aim to improve hygiene education and reduce open defecation.

Representatives from the Lagos State government, including Babatunde Akinwunmi of the Office of Drainage and Water Resources and Mayor Ameen Olawale Ibrahim Apanisile of Ikorodu North LCDA, praised WaterAid’s work and pledged continued support for sustainability and community ownership.

The Director of Basic Education Services also acknowledged the positive impact on schools, noting the introduction of monitoring systems to ensure proper maintenance.

Ruth Agwulobi of WaterAid’s fundraising team reaffirmed the project’s commitment to advancing inclusive WASH services with a focus on women, girls, and vulnerable groups.

The AI WASH Project aims to serve as a model for sustainable WASH programming in Lagos, combining government leadership, private sector funding, and technical expertise to secure lasting improvements in water and sanitation access.

Emmanuel urged joint commitment from all stakeholders, stating, “We are not just bringing money; we are bringing solutions—and asking the government and communities to bring their commitment. Together, we can make safe water and sanitation a reality for all.”
