WAPAN Voices Concerns Over Proposed Total Ban on Waste Picking
By Salifu Faridat
The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) has expressed deep concern and disapproval regarding recent calls for an outright ban on waste picking within the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja.
WAPAN who raised concerns on Wednesday in a statement, believes that a blanket ban would not serve the best interests of our communities, the environment, or the waste pickers themselves.
Waste pickers, often referred to as “baban bola” or “scavengers,” have played a vital role in mitigating climate change and maintaining environmental cleanliness, all while contributing significantly to the local economy.
These hardworking individuals have not only provided a valuable service but have also supported their families through their honest and diligent work.
Acknowledging isolated incidents involving criminal activities within waste picking communities, WAPAN firmly believes that these issues can be effectively addressed through a comprehensive and sustainable approach, rather than resorting to an outright ban.
WAPAN advocates for the restructuring and strategic enhancement of waste picking activities, aiming to benefit both the people and the environment.
Their proposed multifaceted solution includes educational programs, standardized operating guidelines, the creation of a task force within the waste picking community, formal identification processes, the implementation of a robust monitoring system, and more.
This holistic approach aims to address the root causes of problems associated with waste picking and create a safer and more sustainable waste collection and management system.
By supporting and empowering waste pickers, the objective is to ensure the safety and security of communities, genuine waste pickers, and the environment.
WAPAN extends appreciation to the efforts of security agencies, media outlets, and environmental authorities in addressing these concerns and their willingness to collaborate in this endeavor.
They believe that together, a balanced and effective solution to the complex issue of waste picking in Nigeria can be found.
WAPAN is committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that waste picking activities are carried out responsibly, benefiting society, while preserving the environment.
