VOXPOP: Why some Nigerians no longer take precautions against Covid-19
By Bisola Adeyemo
The number of Covid-19 cases detected in the country recently indicates that a second wave of the outbreak has begun. Yet many Nigerians are not ready to take precautions of regular use of facemasks, handwashing, social distancing and the use of sanitizer against the disease.
With this NatureNews went to town in attempt to know why many no longer take precautions against covid-19.
Pastor John: Covid-19 is real. But it can’t stop a man from making his daily bread. Things are hard in the land. Why should I go buying facemasks, sanitizers when children are crying for food. I prefer not to die of hunger than to die of Covid-19.
Frank Obi: When the tommy is fed, we can think of facemask. Facemask cannot close a month that hasn’t been fed.
Hassan Sanni: Covid-19 does not exist. Government is lying about it. As a labourer going to site everyday to look for what to eat since, nothing has happened. I’m here and healthy.
Ibrahim Lawal: Covid-19 is real but is meant for the rich people who have money to travel abroad. I’ve been going to work everyday without a facemask and nothing happened to me.
Mary Oshaleye: The level of our ignorance in this country is higher than what we can imagine. This disease is real and it increasing again as a result of our ignorance. My advice is that as an individual, do whatever you can to prevent yourself from being infected.
Mrs John: As a trader, I will advise Nigerians to obey the government by wearing facemasks regularly, washing hands and keeping social distance. Those who went to isolation centers know that being in isolation for 14days is not a joke.
Mary Ojekere: I don’t think Covid-19 is real. We have been going to church. My children attend classes everyday; they meet people on a daily basis yet nothing happens. 2021 is a year we’re hoping for great resolution so government should not bring another lockdown to spoil our plans against the New Year.
Joseph Andeyaba: Over 50% of Nigerians has Covid-19. The ones detected are the number of cases NCDC has given us. I believe there’s Covid-19 so I use my facemask everyday.
Olu Gold: Nigerian has strong immune system to withstand Covid-19. Without facemask or social distancing, our herbs will not fail us.
Precious Joel: There is Covid-19 but personally, I do not use facemask. Breathing with facemask is unbearable.
