VOX POP: Why Nigerians love eating dog meat

Dog meat consumption has been prevalent in Nigeria for some time and has been considered as a source of protein by some households.
As part of efforts to create awareness on wildlife, pets conservation, NatureNews carried out vox pop to know reasons some Nigerians love eating dog meat.
Food made with dog meat is still consumed among some tribes in Nigeria while other tribes see it as taboo for human consumption.
Finding out why some Nigerians eat dog meat, Olaniyi Onemola, said, “I don’t eat dog meat, not because I was brought up in the north, but because I am selective in all kinds of food I eat.”
Antonia Ajuma said, “I hate dog meat because literally, I see dogs as human beings so eating it makes it look like eating human flesh.”
Victor Effiong said, “Eating dog meat has been part of my life. Dog meat is one of the cheapest meat to get around. However, it is a special meat that is not generally found in all markets. Also, eating dog meat prevents sickness such as malaria.”
Ogunjibi Matthew said, “I’m from Ondo state where some communities derive pleasure in eating dog meat including my community, but I do not eat it because they are domestic animals.”
Somalia Muhammed said, “Eating dog meat is forbidden in my religion. We have a lot of meat like cows, sheep, goats, etc. eating dog meat is not allowed in my religion.”
