Vehicle emissions major cause of Lagos smog — LASEPA

About 70% of the choking smog affecting Lagos State is caused by vehicle emissions, according to the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).
The agency’s General Manager, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, disclosed this on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, via his verified X account, calling it an “invisible threat” the agency is tackling head-on.
Ajayi revealed that over 12,000 vehicles have been inspected so far in 2025 as part of LASEPA’s ongoing crackdown on non-compliant emissions.
He noted that the agency enforces strict annual vehicle emissions inspections to reduce pollution from the transport sector. “Every compliant vehicle means cleaner air for all of us,” he said.
LASEPA also released its latest Air Quality Index earlier in the week, showing the levels of pollution across various parts of the state.
Egbeda, Alimosho, and NiMet in Oshodi recorded the best air quality, while Kosofe, Victoria Island, and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority ranked lowest on the index, indicating higher pollution levels.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to improving air quality and protecting public health across the state.
