Varsity Don Urges Natural Resources Utilization for Health, Environmental Solutions

By Abdullahi Lukman

A Professor of Natural Product Chemistry at Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, Bamidele Okoli, has appealed to the Federal Government to prioritize the use of Nigeria’s abundant natural resources in tackling growing health and environmental challenges.

Professor Okoli made the appeal during the university’s 7th Inaugural Lecture, held on Tuesday at the university campus in Karu Local Government Area.

His lecture, titled “The Gift of Mother Nature: The Key to Utopia,” emphasized the importance of returning to nature to build a healthier, more sustainable society.

According to Okoli, many modern health and environmental problems are linked to the continued reliance on synthetic drugs and fossil fuel-based products, which often cause unintended harm.

“Most of our drugs today are synthesized using fossil fuels. While they aim to treat health issues, their development and usage often create more problems,” he said.

He described “utopia” as a state of harmony between humans and nature, comparable to the biblical Garden of Eden, and argued that this ideal could be achieved by embracing nature-based solutions.

“We must look inward and use the resources God has given us — the herbs, plants, and natural elements that our ancestors once relied upon,” he said.

Professor Okoli urged government agencies such as the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to support natural resource-based drug development and public education campaigns.

He also called for increased investment in research and sustainable practices to help bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern science.

Earlier in the event, Vice Chancellor of Bingham University, Prof. Haruna Ayuba, commended Okoli for delivering a timely and thought-provoking lecture.

He said the topic was particularly relevant in today’s global climate, where sustainability has become a major focus.

Ayuba emphasized the importance of inaugural lectures in advancing academic tradition and promoting knowledge sharing.

“This lecture highlights the university’s commitment to fostering research, scholarship, and community engagement. As we grow, we plan to compile and publish these lectures for wider access and impact,” he stated.

The event brought together members of the academic community, students, and guests from various sectors, reinforcing the link between academic institutions and societal development.
