Vandalism, reason for nationwide blackout – Minister

By Nneka Nwogwugwu

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, has stated on Saturday that vandalism on a transmission tower on the Odukpani – Ikot Ekpene 330kV double circuit caused the National blackout that occurred Friday night.

The Minister who had earlier made a statement on the position of the Power ministry later released another Press statement, noting that the vandalism resulted to loss of about 400MW generation.

The statement was signed by Isa Sanusi, the media aide to the Minister.

The statement also informed that power is being restored sequentially by the system operator.

It added that other on-grid power plants are being dispatched to cover the lost generation capacity from the Calabar power plant owned by the Niger Power Holding Company Ltd.
