The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG-6), which aims for universal access to clean water and sanitation.

In statement made public by Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan, Director of Information and Public Relations, on September 16, 2025.

This commitment was restated by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, at the 8th International Water Conference in Makurdi, Benue State.

The conference’s theme focused on innovative solutions for sustainable urban water development and management in Nigeria.
During his address, Minister Utsev highlighted several projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including major dam and irrigation initiatives.

These projects, such as the 460 MW Katsina-Ala Dam and the 186 MW Bawarku Dam, are designed to boost revenue, hydropower generation, and food security.

The minister also mentioned flagship programs like the World Bank-supported SURWASH Project and the ministry’s PEWASH program, both of which are expanding access to safe water and sanitation. Additionally, he noted the ongoing Clean Nigeria Campaign, which aims to end open defecation by 2030.

The minister acknowledged the support of President Tinubu and praised Nigerian engineers and water professionals for their crucial role in achieving progress. He urged conference attendees to share innovative ideas and help shape government policies.

Other speakers at the conference, including Benue State Governor’s Chief of Staff, Barr. Moses Atagher, and the National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers (NIWE), Engr. Joshua Titus Sanga, also emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation. They stressed that achieving SDG-6 requires strategic partnerships and an inclusive, forward-thinking approach.

The three-day conference will include technical sessions, exhibitions, and panel discussions to share best practices and develop strategies to ensure a water-secure future for all Nigerians.
