UNILAG Seminar to Address Waste Decarbonization, Climate Action

By Abdullahi Lukman
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is to host a seminar focused on the decarbonization of waste recycling and co-processing technologies for sustainable climate action.
The event, scheduled for April 22 at the Rahamon Bello Hall, aims to address the significant environmental challenges posed by Nigeria’s annual waste generation of 32 million tonnes.
Titled: ‘Sustainable Climate Action in Nigeria Through Waste Decarbonisation and Co-processing Technology,’ the seminar is expected to bring together experts from UNILAG, Coca-Cola Company, Lafarge Africa, and Polysmart Group, among others.
Discussions are expected to focus on innovative solutions to waste management, with a special emphasis on advanced recycling methods and co-processing technologies that can help mitigate climate change and enhance resource efficiency.
Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit at UNILAG, explained that the seminar is to explore the role of research and development in driving sustainable waste management practices.
She highlighted that the event will foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government, with an aim to create industrial opportunities in co-processing and recycling for climate mitigation.
“The seminar will adopt a multi-stakeholder approach, offering technical sessions, expert panels, and policy roundtables to discuss the science, economics, and regulatory needs for waste innovation in Nigeria,” said Alaga-Ibraheem.
The event is also expected to provide a platform for networking and public-private partnerships that can have long-term impacts on climate resilience.
UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, is to serve as the chief host, while the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Prof. Bola Oboh, is to host the event.
Emeritus Professor Babajide Alo, a renowned chemist, is to deliver the keynote address. Other speakers are to include Prof. Lucian Chukwu, Prof. Sunday Adebisi, Mrs. Amaka Onemelukwe of Coca-Cola, Mr. Dada Adedokun from Lafarge Africa, and Mr. Wasiu Abolaji Balogun from Polysmart Group.
The seminar is part of UNILAG’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the global conversation on climate change, aiming to find practical solutions that integrate sustainability into Nigeria’s waste management systems.
