UNILAG lauds NatureNews, founded by UNILAG Alumnus, for JTI Certification
University of Lagos (UNILAG) Management, on behalf of the entire University community, heartily celebrates NatureNews for emerging as the first media outlet in Nigeria to pass the journalism integrity audit, and be certified by the global Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI).
The University is proud of its alumni from the Department of Mass Communication who are at the helm of affairs of NatureNews: Aliu Akoshile, who is the Founder/Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of NatureNews and Hon. Raheem Adedoyin, who is the Chairman, Board of Directors of NatureNews.
This feat is a testament to the professionalism and integrity instilled in UNILAG products and how it places the nation and Africa in good light.
The Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) is an ISO standard, designed based on about one hundred and thirty (130) decisive and objective criteria relating to the transparency of the media and the professionalism of the editorial processes.
It was initiated and is operated by the Paris-based press freedom watchdog and human rights nongovernmental organisation, Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontieres – RSF), and is supported by over 130 experts and organizations representing journalists, editors, technology and advertising industries across the world.
NatureNews is an independent newspaper on the environment, climate change, and sustainable earth. It is committed to amplifying the African voice in the global conversations on climate change and raising public awareness for collaborative advocacy that will culminate in sustainable solutions to environmental issues.
Receiving JTI’s seal of approval places NatureNews among the few news outlets around the world that can be trusted to provide verified information in its niche. Being JTI certified means that NatureNews complies with the numerous international professional norms and ethics for which JTI is a proponent.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, heartily congratulates NatureNews for this JTI certification through which the brains behind it have blazed a historic trail for Nigeria and the nation’s media.
She encourages the UNILAG alumni and their team to keep up with their unwavering commitment to journalism ethics, managerial excellence, professional integrity, and corporate governance.
Students and fresh graduates are encouraged, through this medium, to always distinguish themselves in whatever field they find themselves; ensuring the continued portrayal of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) vision, which is: excellence in knowledge, character and service to humanity.
